🏞️ Jajce waterfall
BEAUTIFUL WATERFALLS IN THE VERY CENTER OF THE CITY
The most beautiful decoration of this small town located in the center of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where about 30 thousand people live, are the Vrbas and Pliva rivers. The city is located at their confluence, and the waterfalls on the Pliva River are located practically in the center of the city. This is not a common sight even on a global scale! The beautiful waterfalls, 22 meters high, have over time become a recognizable symbol of the city, and are sometimes ranked among the most beautiful in the world. It is assumed that they were formed about 50 thousand years ago.
🏰 Old Bosnian Houses
The old town complex is one of the most famous symbols of the city of Jajce. The building is located above the city itself, ‘looking’ at it from a height of 470 meters, and dates back to the 13th century. One of the attractions of the complex itself is the catacombs there. Their construction was ordered, in the rock within the walls, by Duke Hrvoje Vukčić, and they were built around 1400.
The catacombs also contain a crypt with an altar, and the catacombs have had various functions throughout history – during the Ottoman period they were a sanctuary, and during the Austro-Hungarian period they allegedly served as a beer warehouse. Across from the catacombs is the Church of St. Mary from the 13th century, and the so-called Medvjed kula also stands out. According to some sources, it got its name because of its size and walls that are as thick as six meters. According to others, it was named so because bears lived there and prisoners were thrown to them.
🛶 Plivsko lake
Veliko and Malo plivsko jezero, which are only a few kilometers away from Jajce. The lakes are located in the Pliva valley, between Jajce itself and a place called Jezero, and Veliko lies at an altitude of about 400 meters. It is about three kilometers long, on average 400 meters wide, while its maximum depth is 36 meters. The small lake is about 950 meters long, on average about 220 meters wide, and its greatest depth is about 20 meters. The lakes are a great place for an active vacation, and are also popular among kayakers.
🏕️Mlinčići
The area of the aforementioned lakes is also adorned with a group of mills on the Pliva River. This is a complex of about 20 small, traditional and restored oak mills located on a travertine barrier between the two lakes, each of which is 400 years old. Six of them are still in operation today, the rest have been restored but serve only as monuments of tradition. The entire area – the Pliva River, the lakes and the mills – have been declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In Jajce you can also see the temple dedicated to the god Mithra, the Persian sun god, which is the oldest national monument in the city. It dates from the second to fourth centuries, was found by chance during the construction of a private house, and is one of the best preserved examples of such a temple in Europe.
In the city you will also find the AVNOJ Museum, the building where the 2nd session of AVNOJ was held on 29 and 30 November 1943, and the Franciscan Museum is certainly an attraction, where visitors can see the remains of the last Bosnian king, Stjepan Tomašević. The Franciscan Museum, according to some sources, is the best museum in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
